Give your outlets a dose of AI with these great deals on smart plugs

Mac World - Mon, 2018-04-02 11:00

There may be new smart version of use about every device we use, but most of the lights and small appliances we already have in our homes are still too “dumb” to connect to our smart systems. To bring them up to speed, smart plugs can add convenience and control to any Wi-Fi connected home.

The Wemo mini smart plug is on sale for $24.99 on Amazon, the lowest price since Black Friday. In our four-star review, we especially liked this plug for its connectivity and simple, compact design. Once connected to Wi-Fi, you’ll be able to control your Wemo smart plug via voice or by using the Belkin app, and you'll be able to schedule at time for it to turn off or choose a “randomize” option to make it look like you’re home when you’re out of the house.

The Acer Aspire S24 is an $879 all-in-one PC with touches of class

PC World - Mon, 2018-04-02 08:00

Acer’s Aspire S24 caught our eye in a way few all-in-one PCs do, because we almost didn’t catch it. At 0.235 inches, the display on the Aspire S24 is blink-and-you'll-miss-it thin, a refreshing change from the chunky, top-heavy profiles of most machines in this category.

The super-slim screen makes the the Aspire S24 look premium, even though at its heart it's still a mainstream PC. By focusing on the display technology, Acer gives it some distinction, balancing value with design. This is a machine you could place at a reception area or have out in the family room with no aesthetic risk. And it has one more forward-looking surprise, too.

The 10 iPhone and iPad games you need to play from March 2018

Mac World - Mon, 2018-04-02 07:00
March's iOS games

March was a huge month for iOS game releases, as two of the world’s most popular PC and console games made their way to iPhone and iPad—and the core games are nearly identical to each other, to boot. Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds both brought their raucous 100-player online shootouts to iOS this month, and they both play impressively well on touch.

Asus ZenBook Flip 14 UX461UN review: A sleek, solid 2-in-1 laptop that's eclipsed by our favorite

PC World - Mon, 2018-04-02 06:30

Peppy, slim, easy to look at and fun to type on, the $900 Asus ZenBook Flip 14 has a lot going for it. That said, it’s tough to recommend the Flip over our current favorite 2-in-1, the HP Spectre x360, which offers a more powerful CPU, a pair of speedy Thunderbolt 3 ports, and substantially better battery life, all for just $170 extra. Still, bargain hunters looking for a slightly larger display than the Spectre’s 13-inch screen may yet be swayed by the cheaper Flip 14.

Asus ZenBook Flip 14 specifications and price

We reviewed the $900 version of the ZenBook Flip 14, which boasts an Intel Core i5-8250U quad-core processor with integrated UHD 620 graphics, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB solid-state drive. If you’ve got more money to burn, there’s a step-up model of the Flip 14 with an i7-8550U CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a discrete Nvidia GeForce MX150 graphics chip.

PC Building Simulator might be one of the most important DIY enthusiast tools ever created

PC World - Sat, 2018-03-31 09:43

It’s been almost exactly a year since we last checked in with PC Building Simulator. A productive year, it seems. What was once an extremely rough “pre-alpha build” on itch.io is now a more polished $20 Early Access production on Steam. Yes, you can buy it and start assembling your own dream PCs right now, complete with dozens of licensed parts. There’s even the skeleton of a career mode.

And I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but I think PC Building Simulator might be one of the most important enthusiast tools since the advent of PCPartPicker. It’s one part tutorial, one part visualizer, and one part wish fulfillment—a perfect blend.

Free design tip: Make it look like what Apple made

Mac World - Sat, 2018-03-31 07:00

Another day, another example of the “natural evolution” of design just happening to, quite coincidentally and certainly without any conscious effort, trending toward, uh, well, looking exactly like whatever Apple made.

Writing for The Verge, Vlad Savov takes a first look at Huawei’s FreeBuds.

“Huawei’s wannabe AirPods look and feel good.”

That’s about all he can say at this point as Huawei hasn’t let anyone listen to anything with them yet.

In Europe, Huawei is pricing the FreeBuds at €159…

FreeBuds. Neither free nor associated with adorable and precocious basketball-playing golden retrievers.

The best wireless chargers for iPhone X and iPhone 8

Mac World - Fri, 2018-03-30 17:02

With the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, Apple has finally joined the wireless charging revolution. For years, many Android users have had the ability to simply plop their phone on a pad to juice it up, but to do that with an iPhone used to require a special (and bulky) case.

Apple Pencil lag test: New iPad vs. iPad Pro

Mac World - Fri, 2018-03-30 14:21

We’re still a few days away from our complete review of the new 9.7-inch iPad, but in the meantime we made a quick lag test video for anyone who wants to see how well it holds up compared to a 2015 12.9-inch iPad Pro. (A newer model currently isn’t in the office.) Our full review will discuss the Pencil’s performance on the 9.7-inch iPad in greater detail, especially since it’s one of the key selling points, but this should help you out if you’re seeking a quick visual comparison.

Put simply, I barely notice any difference between the two while using most Pencil-compatible apps. If anything, the Apple Pencil feels as though it delivers slightly smoother performance in the Notes Plus app on the new 9.7-inch iPad compared to the older Pro. (I also put a brand-new nib on my older Apple Pencil for a more even comparison.)

This week in games: Red Faction Guerrilla gets 'Re-Mars-Stered,' de_dust2 appears in Far Cry 5

PC World - Fri, 2018-03-30 11:30

I’m pretty sure building de_dust2 in any map-editing tool is the equivalent of running Doom on every device with a screen. It’s mandatory. Mandatory. So it’s no surprise someone already did it with Far Cry 5’s spin-off Arcade mode.

A look at that, plus new trailers for Pillars of Eternity II and Jurassic World Evolution, details on a Red Faction: Guerrilla remaster and one for Mark of the Ninja too, and free copies of Spec Ops: The Line (for a limited time).

This is gaming news for March 26 to 30.

The discounts

Starting this week as always with everyone’s favorite: Free games. This week it’s Humble again giving away the goods, with “the goods” in this case being free copies of Spec Ops: The Line, everyone’s favorite slightly-deeper-than-your-average-shooter shooter. It probably isn’t as impactful in 2018 as it was in 2012—the shooter landscape’s changed a lot. Still, nobody else has even attempted something better yet so...yeah. Pick it up, and fast. The deal only runs until Saturday.
