Accidentally merged a set of photos in iCloud Photo Library? Here’s a fix

Mac World - Thu, 2018-10-04 08:00

When everything works as expected in iCloud Photo Library, you not only have access to all your images and videos on every device logged into the same iCloud account, but they’re all backed up by Apple, too.

However, disorder can enter this perfect realm unintentionally. Macworld reader Jack and his girlfriend—let’s call her “Jill”—tripped into a situation when she logged into his Apple ID to install an app he’d purchased. (Sure, technically, that’s not how Apple wants you to share apps. It would rather people use Family Sharing, but that feature remains weak and inconsistent, and I understand when people are driven to use this alternate approach.)

Android Confidential: The LG V40 is a better G7, with an OLED display and an extra camera

PC World - Thu, 2018-10-04 07:00

LG is kicking off Android’s jam-packed October with the V40 ThinQ. It’s LG’s fourth phone this year, following the V30S, G7 and V35, and I’ll admit I didn’t have high hopes for it. After the tremendous G6, LG lost its focus a bit. It was starting to look like it had forgotten how to make exciting phones.

Nothing up my sleeve: MacBook Pro complaints

Mac World - Thu, 2018-10-04 07:00

When it comes to Apple, there are no small complaints, only small minds that do not understand that every small complaint is another sign of the company’s slide in quality.

Writing for the Forbes contributor network and #1 Caillou fan club homepage on the internet, Ewan Spence tells us the “2018 MacBook Pro Design Has Made A Mistake.” (Tip o’ the antlers to Nick.)

Oh, no! Is it the keyboard? Is it USB-C, which is a rather confusing jumble of capabilities that hasn’t really caught on yet?

NOPE.

Alongside the announcement of the new MacBook Pro machines earlier this month, Apple also announced the availability of a new leather MacBook Sleeve.

Core i9-9900K vs. Ryzen 2800X: Totally fake benchmarks!

PC World - Thu, 2018-10-04 06:00

Intel’s rumored “Ryzen-Killing” 5GHz Core i9-9900K and AMD’s rumored “Core i9-Killing” Ryzen 7 2800X aren’t official CPUs yet. But the slow drip of leaks and rumors surrounding the launch of the next big chip war has reached a full-on deluge.

The leaks have gotten so bad, Amazon even posted a picture of the Intel part (which isn’t on sale yet) this week. We’re also now seeing more leaks of AMD’s highly anticipated Ryzen 7 2800X, expected to offer up to 10 cores on a 7nm process, running at up to 4.5GHz.

In the spirit of unconfirmed rumors and leaks that feed on our deepest Fears Of Missing Out, we’ve conducted a completely fake and made-up showdown between the unannounced and possibly fake CPUs. All of our information comes from the Internet, so we guarantee it’s true.

Hands on with Alienware m15: The thinnest 15-inch Alienware laptop ever made

PC World - Thu, 2018-10-04 03:01

Alienware’s beefy gaming laptops have never been known to be thin, but that’s about to change. The new Alienware m15 introduced Thursday is a whopping 17 percent thinner and 30 percent smaller than the current 15-inch Alienware laptop.

Pricing of the new Alienware m15 wasn’t immediately available, but it's likely to be in the same range as its thicker relative's going rate. Much will depend on what’s inside when it goes on sale October 25.

Why this matters: Gaming laptops are the last bastion of hulking, fire-breathing, theoretically portable PCs. But thin is in, even with gamers, and new generations of CPU and GPU have made slimmer performance laptops possible. Alienware's m15 is just the latest to get the Biggest Loser makeover, while maintaining a decent amount of gaming cred.

Civilization VI for iPhone review: Handing over the kingdom

Mac World - Thu, 2018-10-04 03:01

The team at Aspyr certainly understands their Civ. While I had my attention focused elsewhere, they advanced so far down their technology tree that they managed to stuff a game as complex as Civilization VI on the iPhone and make it look as though it belonged there all along. If this were a game of Civ, I would have figured such a feat would have taken them a few more turns.

After all, it was only a little over a year ago when my jaw dropped at the sight of Civilization VI running on an iPad; its complex mouse-and-keyboard controls brilliantly translated to Apple’s language of taps and swipes. But that’s the little leagues compared to what I’m seeing here. I can build empires on the subway. I can usher in great ages of science on the sidewalk to work. And for the most part, at least with my iPhone XS Max, I’m preferring this version over its counterparts on larger-screened devices.

Best power banks of 2018: The top USB portable chargers for your phone

PC World - Wed, 2018-10-03 18:30

Anyone who uses a smartphone knows the importance of carrying a backup power bank. But given the large number of options on Amazon, you might feel overwhelmed, understandably. Besides the various charging specs, ports, and even cables you have to consider, there are a ton of competing brands. It’s common to see products from Anker, Mophie, and MyCharge, but how do you know which ones deliver on their promises? Is it worth saving a few bucks if a battery pack’s performance is lacking?

Power bank cheat sheet Our quick-hit recommendations:
    1. Powerstation Plus XL View
    2. Xiaomi 10,000mAh Mi Power Bank Pro View
    3. 26400mAh Laptop Power Bank View
    4. Powercore+ 26800 PD View

As for the latter, be advised: Amazon voluntarily recalled six different models of its AmazonBasics-branded external power banks after they were found to potentially overheat.

Meet the LG V40 ThinQ: More screen, more battery, more cameras, and more fun

PC World - Wed, 2018-10-03 17:42

LG isn't reinventing the wheel with the V40 ThinQ. In fact, if you compare its specs to those of the LG G7 that launched just a few months ago, you won't see much that's different. But LG has upgraded the V40 where it matters most: the screen, the battery, and the cameras.

That means the V40 has a notch, a dedicated Assistant button, a normal power button on the side, and a headphone jack. It actually feels like more of an upgrade to the G7 than the V30. Holding the V40 is reminiscent of the G7's shape and aesthetic, but larger: at 6.4 inches versus 6.1 inches, it's a noticeable difference, especially since the bezels are roughly the same size all around.

The LG Watch W7 is what you get when you put mechanical hands on a giant digital screen

PC World - Wed, 2018-10-03 17:00

The V40 isn't the only new trick up LG's sleeve this fall. Also on tap is the LG Watch W7, the company's first smartwatch in 18 months. It's a new sort of hybrid that promises extra-long battery life.

We've seen plenty of hybrid Wear OS smartwatches from the likes of Fossil, Misfit, and Nokia/Withings, but the W7 puts a unique spin on the concept. Instead of a small screen for steps and mini alerts, LG's new wearable has a full 1.2-inch screen that runs Wear OS 2.1, so you'll be able to use apps just like you would on a normal smartwatch.

What makes the W7 a hybrid is a pair of ever-present mechanical hands. That means you can tell time even after the battery can no longer power the full smartwatch screen. The W7's 240mAh battery isn't that big, but LG promises a whopping 100 days of use, if you count non-smartwatch use.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update review: Many small improvements make a better experience

PC World - Wed, 2018-10-03 15:00

Microsoft’s Windows 10 October 2018 Update, officially released October 2, doesn’t offer the standout, marquee features you might have come to expect from earlier releases. But as our review demonstrates, a few new features highlight a longer list of under-the-hood, day-to-day improvements.

Our review is based on the final Windows 10 Insider Builds, which led up to the official October 2018 Update. Microsoft doesn’t appear to have added anything with the announcement, but we’ll check and update this story to reflect any last-minute changes.
