How to test your home internet connection speed

Mon, 2017-08-28 20:12

Testing your internet connection’s performance is a straightforward exercise. You don’t need any extra software—all you need is a computer with a web browser. But there are also a few things you can do to make sure you are getting the most accurate reading of your internet connection. Here’s what to do.

Get ready

For best results, you want to use a wired connection if at all possible; that way, you don’t have to worry about interference and performance fluctuations that can occur while you’re on Wi-Fi. If you have any other wired devices on your home network, plug your test computer directly into the modem so those don’t interfere in your testing.

Bethesda's QuakeCon sale is still live on Steam, with classic games for less than $2

Mon, 2017-08-28 16:55

QuakeCon ended Sunday, but the effects of that conference are still being felt. No, I'm not talking about early access to Quake Champions, but the annual QuakeCon sale still available on Steam. ZeniMax-owned Bethesda Softworks has some of its classic games on sale until Tuesday morning. The sale includes mostly Bethesda in-house and published titles, as well as published titles from other ZeniMax properties.

For $1.24 each, you can pick-up The Ultimate DoomDoom II, and Doom III. If those shooters don't appeal, try Return to Castle Wolfenstein for $1.24, Quake 4 for $3.74, or Doom 3: BFG Edition for $5.

Microsoft has spent much of this year building up its mixed-reality ecosystem. The company has promised that mixed reality will be a key part of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Working in concert, its hardware partners—HP, Lenovo, Dell, and Acer—plan to launch mixed-reality devices in time for the holidays.

Dell revs up its XPS 13 with Intel's quad-core Kaby Lake R

Mon, 2017-08-28 09:00

Dell’s XPS 13 is already a great laptop. Now imagine that laptop performing 40 percent faster than it does now. That’s the promise of the CPU refresh Dell announced for the product line on Monday at IFA in Berlin. The XPS 13’s two highest-end SKUs will have Intel’s latest 8th-generation Core chips, called Kaby Lake R.

The updated XPS 13 product line will start shipping September 12 with a base price of $799, but that model is not Kaby Lake R-fortified. AMD's Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics card launches to battle the GeForce GTX 1070

Mon, 2017-08-28 07:00

The true star of AMD’s high-end Vega graphics card lineup is finally here. Today, Radeon RX Vega 56 hits the streets.

While the (theoretically) $499 Vega 64 didn’t fare well against Nvidia’s similarly priced GeForce GTX 1080 in PCWorld’s exhaustive Radeon RX Vega review, the $399 Vega 56 delivers a far better value proposition. It slightly outpunches the GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition in most games we tested, especially if you move up to 1440p or 4K resolution. Sure, it draws more power to do so, but not an outrageous amount—unlike Vega 64.

Windows 10's My People: Microsoft makes it easy to just wave hello

Mon, 2017-08-28 06:00

Windows 10’s My People feature addresses a need some of us have, at least some of the time: a simple reminder that our friends are thinking about us.

My People is a feature we expect to see in Windows 10's Fall Creators Update. (Note: We've tested it as part of Windows 10’s Insider Program, so Microsoft may still be ironing out any small bugs we experienced.) It allows you to select your three best friends and symbolically place them near you, via icons in the taskbar. Just as you might stop by for a chat, My People allows you to quickly Skype or email them—and just them—all from a single button on your taskbar. And the best feature is how they can respond: “Shoulder taps” pop up emoji right from your taskbar, so that your friend can wave hello.
