'ShadowHammer' infects Asus PCs through its Asus Live Update utility

Mon, 2019-03-25 13:06

Over 57,000 users, and possibly up to a million, have downloaded and installed a version of the Asus Live Update utility that was poisoned with a backdoor and hosted on the official Asus servers.

What security vendor Kaspersky is calling ShadowHammer was actually a targeted attack at a small number of users.  (The investigation is still in progress, Kaspersky said.) Kaspersky said that the ShadowHammer attack had been detected worldwide, most commonly in Russia and Germany, with about five percent of victims in the United States.

From a security standpoint, the most disturbing aspect of the malware is that it was digitally signed with legitimate security certificates, the stamp of authenticity that would make them indistinguishable from a real update. The Asus Live Update software is designed to look for new versions of the programs released on the Asus website and then automatically update a PC’s BIOS, drivers, and applications. If ShadowHammer allowed the PC to download malicious BIOS software from another site, that software could take over the entire PC. The Live Update software can be downloaded from the Asus site, and it also comes pre-loaded on PCs.

Cobian Backup 11 (Gravity) review: Free, option-rich and effective file backup

Mon, 2019-03-25 12:40

Cobian Backup, with its old-guard look and interface, may not be much to look at.  But like many things OG, it works as well as, and quite likely better than, the shiny new toys. If you're looking for something reliable and more configurable that Windows' own File History, it's definitely worth the download.

Specs and features

I started off talking about Cobian's interface, and it is indeed a decade or two out of style with large, somewhat basic icons on the main window and tiny ones on the menus. But that's appearance, and Cobian is a sweetheart in use: neat, efficient, with all the functions and options (of which there are many) logically categorized and laid out.

Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Touch review: It's a hard drive! It's a carpet sample!

Mon, 2019-03-25 06:05

Though my review title makes fun of the basket-weave polyester fabric covering a goodly proportion of Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Touch's upper surface, in truth (and in my opinion) it's a very attractive drive. Perhaps more so than a lot of competitors.

Alas, while you might think that the textured material would provide more grip, it seemed that there's actually a bit less. Go figure. Regardless, it's an attractive, svelte drive, and a very good performer that you should consider even if your tastes run contrary to mine.

Design and features

There's rarely much to talk about design-wise with an external drive, so the the fact that the top of the Ultra Touch is carpeted—excuse me, covered—in a polyester basket-weave immediately makes it distinctive. I quite like the look, but taste is subjective. As to the technical details, the Ultra Touch is a 2.5-inch external USB 3.1 (Gen 1/5Gbps) hard drive available in 1TB (the capacity we tested) and 2TB capacities, and either black or white.

Best cheap laptops: We rate the best-sellers on Amazon and Best Buy

Mon, 2019-03-25 04:32

When you’re looking for a good, cheap laptop, knowledge is power. Every budget machine (which we’re defining as Windows laptops costing $500 or less) is the product of compromise—corners carefully cut here and there to hit a price point.

Your job is to find the one that checks off the most boxes for your needs. We’ll show you what to look for by highlighting which budget laptops among the best-sellers currently listed at Amazon and Best Buy are worth buying. We haven’t necessarily tested these specific machines (we’ll let you know if we have), but we’ve seen enough similar ones to have a good idea of the pros and cons. We’re also focusing on 14-inch and larger laptops, because part of the great deal should be getting a decent-sized display.

Dash cam reviews 2019: Catch the maniacs and meteors of daily driving

Fri, 2019-03-22 22:17

Dash cams are already essential in many countries because of scam artists who try to create accidents so they can sue you. They’ve also proven useful for catching cars flying into buildings, or the occasional meteor, as happened in Thailand and in Russia, all thanks to dash cams in the right place at the right time.

Z-Edge T4 dash cam review: Great video, a touchscreen, and style for miles, but no GPS

Fri, 2019-03-22 20:35

When I pulled the Z-Edge T4 out of its box, I was thinking the company had made a mistake and sent me a digital camera instead. Most dash cams, capable or not, have a rather cheap feel. The T4, on the other hand, has the heft and feel associated with the object I mistook it for.

The T4 is also a very good dash cam with a super-handy 4-inch touch display and a 1080p rear camera. Put bluntly, it’s easily the classiest dash cam system I’ve reviewed. For $170 with a 32GB SD card? Sold. If you don’t need GPS. Dang. For the whole package, the Viofo A129 remains our top pick.

How to play DVDs in Windows 10 for free

Fri, 2019-03-22 19:46

You can play a DVD in Windows 10 for free with a little help. But that help’s probably best if it doesn’t come from Microsoft. I’ll tell you how Microsoft’s solution sort-of works for some people. Then I’ll tell you about the much better alternative called VLC that anyone can use and gets regular updates. Best of all, it’s free!

Updated March 22, 2019, with a second look at the Windows Store app.

RIP Windows Media Center

When Windows 10 came along in 2015, it left behind Windows Media Center, a utility for home theater PCs that let you play DVDs on your computer. Windows 8 didn’t come with it either, but users running Windows 8 Pro could still install Windows Media Center.

Best e-readers for digital-book lovers

Fri, 2019-03-22 19:00

Folks used to think that e-readers would relegate traditional paper books to the scrapyard of the past and destroy the publishing industry as we knew it. But, in the time since the first Kindle e-reader was unveiled in 2007, the dire declarations of what effect the devices might have on our reading habits and on publishers have given way to widespread acceptance from industry wonks and bookworms alike, for one simple reason: E-readers are pretty great.

Lightweight, easily readable in direct sunlight or, on models equipped with a built-in backlight, in the dead of night, an e-reader is an excellent choice for browsing periodicals, documents, comic books, and of course, books. Most are capable of storing thousands of books—and with power-efficient E Ink displays, word aficionados can typically read for weeks at a time before their device’s battery will need to topping off. These are all great features but, as they’re all features that most e-readers share, choosing which device to buy can be daunting. Don’t worry, we’re here to help you find the device that suits your needs. We’ve assembled reviews of the most popular e-readers on the market today—as well as some you might not have heard of that deserve your attention.

Best Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+ cases: Top picks in every style

Fri, 2019-03-22 17:01

Aside from its great screen, ultra-fast processor, and awesome camera, the Samsung Galaxy S10 its also big, slippery, and fragile, and the last thing you want is a giant crack in it.  Here are our favorite cases for the S10 so far.
