Apple Card: Here's who will benefit from it most

Fri, 2019-03-29 19:18

In case you missed it, Apple announced its own credit card during Monday's livestream. Administered by Goldman Sachs, this new entrant into the realm of cash-back rewards will have plenty going for it: zero fees, the promise of low interest rates, daily payout of cash earned, and a polished, helpful interface for management. (You can read all about it in our Apple Card FAQ.)

But as we dug into in our comparison of the Apple Card versus other credit cards, this particular Apple product doesn't have the numbers to trounce its closest cash-back reward card rivals. So who is it for? We outline our thoughts in the video above.

Apple breaks its silence on AirPower only to kill the charging mat once and for all

Fri, 2019-03-29 15:59

Were you hoping that Apple would surprise us with a release of the AirPower wireless charging mat at some point in the coming days? Dash those hopes away, my friends. As TechCrunch reports, Apple has officially canceled the project.

“After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project,” said Apple hardware engineering chief Dan Riccio in a statement. “We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward.”

iPhone 2019 rumors: That ugly square triple-camera might actually make its way into the next iPhone

Fri, 2019-03-29 09:44

What’s in store for the new iPhone in 2019? We won’t officially know until the fall (most likely in September), but until then, you can bet that the rumor mill will be fully operational. This page will keep track of what’s being rumored as new features of the 2019 iPhones, and we’ll provide some analysis and whether or not a rumor seems feasible.

Updated 3/29/19: A leaked schematic of the 2019 iPhone seemingly shows a triple-camera array arranged in a similar triangular pattern to a render that surfaced earlier this year.

What’s the latest: Three cameras and a giant bump

Earlier this year we saw a render that most people dismissed as a concept that would never see the light of day. The funky design showed an iPhone with a giant square bump in the top left corner that housed three cameras and an LED flash and it didn’t seem like something Apple would make. But a new rumor lends a bit more credence to that curious design choice.

Apple Arcade FAQ: Games, price, compatibility, and everything else you need to know

Fri, 2019-03-29 07:00

Apple announced its new Apple Arcade gaming subscription service at its March 25 “It’s show time” event, and it’ll launch sometime this fall. It’s basically Apple’s way of helping customers sort through the chaff in the App Store, as the highly curated service will feature premium games that are untainted by in-app purchases and ads. If it works as well as it sounds, it could elevate the perception of mobile gaming in general.

Many questions remain, but fortunately we already have plenty of answers. Here’s everything we know about Apple Arcade so far.

This week's Apple event was still all about the ecosystem

Fri, 2019-03-29 06:30

Yes, this week’s Apple event wasn’t quite business as usual for the company. It was a long presentation, studded with A-list celebrities and announcements for services—no hardware in sight—that mostly aren’t shipping yet, many of which don’t even have price points. That’s not exactly the moves we’ve come to expect from Apple.

But we were warned upfront by Tim Cook that this time would be a little different, and the company has been banging the drum about bolstering its Services business for a few years now. So while there may have been some head-scratching about the execution of the event, there shouldn’t have been any shock about the overall purpose.

Apple TV Channels FAQ: Services, pricing, availability, and everything else you need to know

Thu, 2019-03-28 15:52

With iOS 12.3, Apple is refreshing the TV app and adding a new feature called Apple TV Channels. Channels lets you subscribe to third-party streaming services like CBS All Access or HBO, right from within the TV app. You can watch that content in the TV app, served directly from Apple, without the need to install other apps.

Here’s everything you need to know about which services are available as Apple TV Channels, what they cost, and how they work.

How do I get Apple TV Channels?

This new feature isn’t available broadly just yet—Apple says it will launch in May along with a redesign of the TV app. That redesign (and a few early Channels) are available in the iOS 12.3 beta, so it’s safe to say that both the new TV app and Channels will launch together with iOS 12.3.

It's time for an 'Apple Prime' subscription bundle

Thu, 2019-03-28 06:30

Apple revealed many services at its March 25 “It’s show time” event, but wasn’t so eager to reveal how much they will cost. It’s no doubt still working out the details, but I think it also wanted to avoid the sticker shock of how much you’ll pay to subscribe to them all.

Both Apple Music and its newly announced Apple News+ service cost $9.99 a month. If Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade end up costing the same, that’s $40 a month you’ll pay to Apple to get it all. And that’s to say nothing of the extra buck or three for iCloud storage and the payments you’ll end up making on your new Apple Card. That’s not just expensive—that’s unwieldy.

Apple's 'apology' for the MacBook keyboard only proves that we need a new MacBook keyboard

Thu, 2019-03-28 06:00

If there’s one thing both Apple fans and detractors can agree on, it’s that the MacBook keyboard sucks. Ever since Apple introduced the “butterfly” mechanism with the redesigned MacBook in 2015, Apple notebook users have had a love-hate relationship with their Macs. As in, they love everything about the MacBook but hate hate hate the keyboard.

In response to mounting criticism about the noise, travel, and dust ingress of the butterfly keyboard—named for the shape of the hinges beneath the keys—Apple has taken several steps. First they quietly launched a Keyboard Service Program for MacBook and MacBook Pro that offers a free repair for devices made between 2015 and 2017 that have letters or characters that repeat, do not appear, or generally don’t respond in a consistent manner. There’s no guarantee Apple is going to fix your machine, mind you, but anyone who bought a MacBook or MacBook Pro during those years can try their luck at an Apple Store.

Apple releases watchOS 5.2 with ECG support for Europe and Hong Kong and new AirPods

Wed, 2019-03-27 19:10

Just a couple days after the release of iOS 12.2, Apple has released its Apple Watch companion update, watchOS 5.2. With it comes a bit of a surprise: support for the irregular heart rate detection and the ECG function on Apple Watch Series 4 for many European countries.

When Apple released the Apple Watch Series 4, it only promised the ECG function for the United States, stating that it had been cleared by the FDA to do so. Other countries would get the hardware, but would be locked out of the ECG software until Apple had secured the proper local clearances. Apple gave to timeframe for this, but it was commonly assumed that it could take a year or more.

Apple TV+ original shows, series, and movies: The complete list

Wed, 2019-03-27 17:43

Apple is said to be spending a couple billion dollars over 2018 and 2019 on the development of exclusive original programming. That’s a lot of TV! It’s nothing compared to the $12 billion Netflix spent on content in 2018, but it’s still a very big investment.

What can you get for a couple billion dollars? Apple hopes to attract some of the best talent in TV and film production, including huge stars and directors, and to lock down the television and movie rights to best-selling books. Though the company has only given us a glimpse at a handful of shows, the Hollywood trade press has uncovered many more through its reporting on deals from casting agents and production companies.
