Mac World - Mon, 2019-05-20 17:47

More and more people are using iPhones, iPads, cameras, drones, and other devices to shoot exciting video. But the thought of sitting down to edit raw footage into content you’re proud to share can be daunting. Whether you’re a novice or a pro,VideoProc provides an easier and faster way to process various media files on your Mac, taking advantage of full hardware acceleration to process and touch up your footage.

Lots of video, much of it raw

Consumers have ready access to a wide variety of devices to shoot video. But raw footage is called that for a reason—nobody really wants to view unedited, shaky video. Need your dragon fix after Game of Thrones’ finale? Head to Elder Scrolls Online’s Elsweyr expansion

Dragons steal the spotlight again in Elder Scrolls Online's Elsweyr expansion, and there are plenty of politics and undead, too.

Need your dragon fix after Game of Thrones’ finale? Head to Elder Scrolls Online’s Elsweyr expansion

PC World - Mon, 2019-05-20 14:06

ZeniMax Online either has an impeccable sense of timing, or it’s so lucky that all its employees should go buy lottery tickets this second. The smoke and memes have barely cleared in the aftermath of last night’s series finale of Game of Thrones, and yet, mere hours later, ZeniMax is kicking open the gates of early access for Elder Scrolls Online’s Elsweyr expansion ahead of its official release next Monday. (Only for PC and Mac users, though—if you’re on a console, you’ll have to wait until next week.)

Elsweyr is a perfect chaser for HBO’s tale of politics and fantastic beasts. You’ll see dragons, for one, and lots of them. You’ll find family members with decidedly different opinions about the invasion of a city, and you’ll even find an army of the undead worked into the mix. And if that all sounds a little too familiar, get this: Elsweyr’s also got a bunch of cat people. And we all know how much the Internet loves its cats.

If you take your broken Apple Watch Series 3 in for repair, there’s a chance that you might get a Series 4 watch back. That is according to a report form 9to5Mac.

The site’s sources claim that an internal memo was sent to Apple Store repair staff and Apple’s Authorized Service Providers, letting them know that there are shortages of parts for the Apple Watch Series 3 Stainless Steel (GPS + Cellular) model, and that some of the replacements will be fulfilled by the comparable Series 4 model instead.

Logitech's couch-friendly K600 TV keyboard has never been this cheap

Mac World - Mon, 2019-05-20 09:59

If you’ve been pining for a couch-friendly keyboard with an integrated trackpad for the living room, today’s your lucky day. Amazon dropped the price of the Logitech K600 TV keyboard to $50. That’s down from a $70 list price, and the $60 street price this keyboard recently hovered around.

The keyboard has a 15 meter wireless range using an included USB dongle. It works with Windows and Mac PCs, as well as Android and iOS devices. Being a living room-focused peripheral, the Logitech K600 can also connect directly to select smart TVs, including Samsung Tizen-based units from 2016, LG TVs rocking webOS 2016 or newer, and Sony Bravia sets running Android TV 2016 and up.

CleanMyMac X 4.4.1 review: Some handy tools but its malware dictation still falls short

Mac World - Mon, 2019-05-20 08:00

MacPaw has shot for the stars with its new version of CleanMyMac X, its catch-all Mac utility that serves as a software crud and gunk remover, as well as a malware scanner, macOS extensions manager, and a universal updater for your installed applications.

Since my initial review of CleanMyMac X, MacPaw made some nice improvements, although some features still fall short of what they could be.

Handy modules

MacPaw set out to make its Menu Bar utility much better and has succeeded. A quick click on the icon reveals handy information such as how much space is left on each of your drive partitions, your Mac’s CPU load, how much RAM is available, your computer’s operating temperature, and other useful information. This is a nice touch and the menu can be customized as you see fit.

FileShadow review: 100GB of free online storage plus local data backup and consolidation

PC World - Mon, 2019-05-20 07:07

FileShadow is a free backup program that's grown up. It started as a very nice cloud storage consolidator with advanced search and sharing abilities. It could transfer from various online storage services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive to its own facilities, as well as tag photos and perform OCR on your PDFs. Good stuff, but not PC backup.

Stop the presses! Or actually, start them up: The company has added both Windows and macOS backup clients. Good thing—free 100GB storage accounts don’t grow on trees these days.

This review is part of our ongoing roundup of the best free backup services. Go there for information on competing products and how we tested them.

12 little-known Apple Watch features you should start using

Mac World - Mon, 2019-05-20 07:00

The Apple Watch is a marvel of miniaturization and can do so much. It’s no wonder it’s the most popular watch in the world. But the tiny display and simple controls don’t leave a lot of room for tutorials and explainers.

Many of the best, most useful features and controls for the Apple Watch are, not exactly hidden, but at least hard to discover.

Take screenshots

Want to brag about that epic workout session or high score in an Apple Watch game? Taking a screenshot on your Apple Watch is simple. Just press and hold the side button and tap the digital crown (you can usually trigger it by simply tapping both buttons at once, which is easier since they’re on the same side of the watch).

How to use Siri for hands-free Apple TV control

Mac World - Mon, 2019-05-20 06:00

Siri has always been one of the Apple TV’s best features. On a fourth-generation Apple TV or Apple TV 4K, the voice assistant can quickly launch videos, tune to live TV channels, and provide search results for specific genres.

But until recently, Apple didn’t offer a hands-free way to use Siri on an Apple TV, like Amazon offers with Fire TV and Alexa, or like Google offers with Chromecast, Android TV, and Google Assistant. If you wanted to control the Apple TV, you had to reach for the remote.

Asus ZenFone 6 hands on: Flipping the script to take on the OnePlus 7 Pro

PC World - Mon, 2019-05-20 06:00

Even if they hadn’t released within days of each other, it’s impossible not to compare the Asus ZenFone 6 to the OnePlus 7 Pro. They both have Snapdragon 855 processors, funky selfie cams, and near-stock Android skins. And they’re both a whole lot cheaper than their premium counterparts.

But while we expected the OnePlus 7 Pro to stand out in the field, the Asus ZenFone 6 may be one of the most surprising phones of the year so far. Where last year’s ZenFone 5z was an iPhone imitator with an ugly notch, forced AI camera gimmicks, and a heavy-handed skin, Asus has completely reimagined its smartphone experience for this year’s model: The camera cutout is gone, the AI scene detector is little more than a toggle, and ZenUI has been all but jettisoned. It’s a refreshing change that makes the ZenFone 6 feel more like a reboot than a annual refresh. That’s exactly what Asus needs to take on OnePlus 7 Pro, the ZenFone 6’s most obvious competitor.
