Cyan’s brief Firmament demo feels like Myst without the Myst name

PC World - Wed, 2018-03-28 10:31

A few weeks ago Cyan surprise-announced Firmament with a short teaser and next-to-no details otherwise. We knew it was built for VR, knew it hewed closer to Myst’s pseudo-steampunk trappings than Obduction did, and...that’s it.

Lucky for me the Firmament demo was at GDC last week. Unlucky for me, there’s not much more to say yet. The demo apparently represents a few months’ work, and Cyan was mostly at GDC seeking funding to turn it into a full project. That means the previous teaser was less an “announcement” and more a “Let’s pique your interest, hopefully.” Keep your fingers crossed, in other words.

The Microsoft Store's spring sale offers huge discounts on laptops, desktop PCs, and games

PC World - Wed, 2018-03-28 10:21

Spring has sprung, and with it comes a big sale at the Microsoft Store on items as varied as laptops and desktops, PC games, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. Here’s a round-up of four especially worthwhile deals, as well as a tip about those headsets.

We adored Dell’s XPS 13 9360, giving it a 4.5/5 star rating in a glowing review. This is one of the best ultraportable laptops you can buy, full stop, and Microsoft’s selling it for $1,000. That’s about $120 cheaper than you’ll find from third-party sellers on Amazon right now, and about $200 cheaper than Newegg’s current sale price.

Best wireless keyboards: Hand-tested reviews of Bluetooth and USB models

PC World - Wed, 2018-03-28 08:24

The best wireless keyboards do more than free you from a cable. They let you toss the crummy keyboard you got for free with your PC—does anyone like that one?—and they also give you options. The models we’ve reviewed range from full-size desktop slabs to portable models that skip easily from laptop to tablet to phone. Whatever you need to type with, there’s a keyboard for it. (If you’re looking for a gaming keyboard, we’ve got you covered! Click that link to see our full reviews and rankings.)

Keyboard choice can be very subjective. That said, we’ve based our reviews on hours spent with each model, banging away on work projects or surfing the web and keeping up on social media.

5 reasons to buy Apple's new 9.7-inch iPad vs. the 10.5-inch iPad Pro

Mac World - Wed, 2018-03-28 06:00

When Apple launched its $329 9.7-inch iPad last year, it was a play for people who wanted to play with their tablets. With today’s new update, Apple is showing that it’s a great tool for work too.

That’s because Apple is adding support for Apple Pencil to the entry-level iPad, letting users write and draw on their new tablet just like they can on the Pro models. With the same tilt support and pressure sensitivity, Apple has turned its cheapest iPad into a device that’s darn close to the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, which costs nearly twice as much. Here are five reasons you might want to buy a $329 iPad instead of a $650 iPad Pro.

Windows 10 Timeline: How to use use Microsoft's new organizational tool

PC World - Wed, 2018-03-28 05:52

Windows 10’s Timeline feature helps answer the question: what was I working on? This handy, optional feature can track what documents and Web pages you’ve been working on over the past weeks and months, organizing them into a collection of documents you can quickly open to pick up where you left off.

Timeline is part of the Windows 10 Spring Creators Update, also known as Redstone 4. Chances are you already know where it’s found, even if you’ve never used it: Down in the taskbar, next to the Cortana search box, there’s a small icon called Task View within the Fall Creators Update. A slightly different icon identifies Timeline within the latest version.

Apple Watch Series 4 rumored to have 15% larger display and longer battery life

Mac World - Tue, 2018-03-27 18:18

Apple has released a new version of the Apple Watch every year since its debut in 2015, and the company seems to show no signs of slowing down.

Reliable industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities has released a note to investors that claims the Apple Watch Series 4 will launch in the third quarter of the year. The Series 4, he claims, will have a 15 percent larger display, longer battery life, and better health tracking.

The report doesn’t really go into specific details on how any of these things will be achieved. For example, the 15 percent larger display may mean a larger Apple Watch case (for the first time since its debut), or it may simply mean less bezel area between the display and the edges of the case.

Apple's Chicago Event: Winners and losers

Mac World - Tue, 2018-03-27 18:00

Apple’s media event Tuesday in Chicago was unique, from the venue to the laser focus on a single topic to the lack of a live video stream. But like all Apple media events, some parties walked away strengthened–and others were left looking sad by the side of the road. Here’s a look at the winners and losers from Tuesday.

The winners

The iPad. Apple hasn’t always shown the kind of love for the iPad that it has done for its much more successful cousin the iPhone, but this day was the iPad’s day to shine, and that’s an important day in any product’s life. The iPad has gained momentum since Apple split the product line in two, and both the $329 iPad and the pricey iPad Pro models have seemingly sold well.

You can now buy the coolest part of the iMac Pro without spending $5,000

Mac World - Tue, 2018-03-27 14:23

Along with an updated 9.7-inch iPad with Pencil support and new classroom-based tools for students and teachers, Apple had one more surprise up its sleeve for its Chicago event. A space gray-colored surprise.

Apple is now selling its too-cool-for-school space gray iMac Pro accessories as an option along with the standard silver color. As you might have expected, they cost more than the ones Apple gives out with regular iMac purchases, but still less than the astronomical prices people are selling them for on eBay.
