Astro's A20 gaming headset ditches the A10's wires for more than twice the price

PC World - Thu, 2017-08-31 17:18

When Astro announced the budget-friendly A10 headset a few months ago, we hypothesized that it was only a matter of time until an A20 slotted into the remaining empty space. Sure enough, it’s here: The Astro A20, a wireless version of the A10.

Retailing for $150, the A20 features the same stripped-down design as the A10 but...wireless. That seems to be the only difference, though I’m judging by photos—I’ve yet to see the headset in person or test it out.

Logitech’s HERO sensor makes the G603 wireless mouse both powerful and wildly long-lasting

PC World - Thu, 2017-08-31 15:07

“Do you even make wired mice anymore?”

I posed that question to Logitech during a briefing this week for its new G603 mouse, yet another wireless addition to Logitech’s lineup. Just two months ago the company introduced  Powerplay—a mousepad that charges your wireless mouse while you play—plus a G900 refresh  to go along with it. So another wireless mouse? Already?

Indeed. Even weirder: The Logitech G603 wireless mouse is not Powerplay compatible—a fact Logitech ascribes to it being developed in parallel.

Microsoft tells some Mac Office users to pass on Apple's High Sierra

Mac World - Thu, 2017-08-31 14:32

Microsoft has warned users of Office for Mac 2011 not to upgrade to Apple’s macOS High Sierra when the new operating system launches next month.

“Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Lync have not been tested on macOS 10.13 High Sierra, and no formal support for this configuration will be provided,” Microsoft wrote in a support document.

In the same document, Microsoft told those running the newer Office 2016 for Mac that they must update its applications to version 15.35 or later, if they intend to upgrade their Macs to High Sierra. (Version 15.35 was released in June; since then, Microsoft has issued 15.36 in July and 15.37 in August.) “In some cases, you may not be able to launch the Office apps [of version 15.34 under High Sierra],” Microsoft said.

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update launch date leaked by Lenovo, slips to October

PC World - Thu, 2017-08-31 14:30

Microsoft may be keeping the official launch date of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update under wraps, but its partners aren’t so shy. In an IFA press release, Lenovo leaked the Windows 10 FCU’s official ship date: October 17.

Lenovo made its disclosures as part of a footnote within the press release announcing the Miix 520, a professional two-in-one PC with support for far-field, standby Cortana recognition, a feature which “requires Windows 10 Fall Creators Update which will automatically update starting October 17, 2017,” the company said. A 2D/3D WorldView camera included in the tablet also requires the Windows 10 FCU, the company said, and again listed the Oct. 17 date.

It’s happening: Apple announces September 12 event

Mac World - Thu, 2017-08-31 13:03

It’s no longer a rumor: the September 12 event is officially happening. Apple sent media invites out on Thursday, inviting the press to an event at the Steve Jobs Theater, located at the new Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California. The event starts at 10 a.m. Pacific.

The invitation didn’t specify what products will be revealed—the invites say, “Let’s meet at our place,” emphasizing the company’s new facilities.

Traditionally, Apple’s early fall event showcases new iPhone models. Reports have stated that Apple will release three iPhone models, two models that are upgrades to the iPhone 7, and a new “premier” iPhone that has been rumored to feature an OLED display surrounded by a thin bezel, facial recognition, new hardware interface and more.

SanDisk crams 400GB into a tiny microSD card

PC World - Thu, 2017-08-31 12:10

If you’re feeling squeezed for space on your favorite device, SanDisk just announced your thumbnail-sized salvation. The new SanDisk Ultra microSXDC USH-I crams in an astonishing 400GB of storage, prompting the company to declare it the “world’s highest capacity microSD card.” Hot damn.

You may remember Microdia announcing a 512GB microSD card in 2015, but it never actually launched.

Stat time: SanDisk says the 400GB Ultra microSDXC card ($250 on Amazon) can hold up to 40 hours of 1080p video, with a Class 10 rating that lets you capture high-def photos and videos, too. The card offers transfer speeds up to 100MBps and meets the A1 App Performance Class specification, which means it can load and run apps lickity-split if you’re using it to boost a mobile device’s storage.

AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 1900X CPU launches

PC World - Thu, 2017-08-31 10:00

The third and final piece of AMD’s initial return to high-end desktops slide into place on Thursday, as the Ryzen Threadripper 1900X hit the streets, along with AMD’s Ryzen Pro processors.

The Threadripper 1900X ($549 on Amazon) doesn’t offer an almost ludicrous number of threads, unlike its bigger brothers, the 12-core Threadripper 1920X ($799 on Amazon) and the 16-core Threadripper 1950X ($999 on Amazon). Instead, it offers 8 cores and 16 threads—similar to the core count in most previous Intel Extreme Edition flagship CPUs, but also mirroring the hardware inside the superb $500 Ryzen 7 1800X.
