Google really wants you to use Maps and search to plan your next outing

PC World - Fri, 2018-09-28 10:33

Google might always know where we are, but it isn't exactly the first name you think of when it comes to travel and trip planning. With a handful of new tools rolling out over the coming weeks (users on Android and iPhones get it first this week), the search giant is trying to change that.

First up is a new feature in Maps. As promised at I/O back in May, Google is finally rolling out group planning, giving users an easy way to create a list that can be shared, modified, and voted on without needing to deal with a constant stream of beeps and buzzes via group texts. Here's how it works:

How to use iOS 12 to enter passwords on an Apple TV

Mac World - Fri, 2018-09-28 08:00

There’s one Apple TV issue that Macworld readers (and me) have dealt with for years: entering passwords! Many tvOS apps rely on a round-trip with a browser instead of a password, providing a code that you enter after using a desktop computer or mobile browser to log into an account. That’s just fine.

With apps that want actual text entered, it’s been frustrating. A few releases ago, Apple linked tvOS and iOS, so that when a text entry field appeared, you received an alert on iOS devices logged into the same Apple ID, and could at least type in from your iPhone or iPad.

You could also enter a password by tapping it in with the keyboard or switching to a password manager app in iOS, finding the account and password, copying the password, switching back, and pasting it in.

The most useful Siri Shortcuts for iPhone

Mac World - Fri, 2018-09-28 07:00

The Shortcuts app for iOS 12 is here at last, and if all goes well, it’ll make up for a lot of the shortcomings of Apple’s Siri service. That’s the plan, anyway. Shortcuts can be fairly complicated, especially when you move beyond the simple actions for accessing popular apps. The whole idea is to trigger a lengthy sequence of actions with a single phrase or button. As a result, Shortcuts can be daunting for the uninitiated (and I fully admit I’m still wrapping my head around them), and that’s one reason so many of the Shortcuts we’ve seen so far have been, well, dreadfully boring.

Antlion ModMic 5 review: The best headset mic you can get, but is it worth it?

PC World - Fri, 2018-09-28 06:00

“Why buy a headset when you could just buy a great pair of headphones and a good microphone for the same price?” So goes the conventional wisdom in comment sections around the world, every time someone dares to suggest that a gaming headset might not be so bad a purchase.

But what if the self-professed audiophiles are right? And what if you could get the same form factor as a headset, but with any top-tier pair of headphones? Wouldn’t that be a better deal?

We went hands on with the ModMic to find out.

(See our roundup of best gaming headsets for a thorough comparison of headset solutions.)

MacOS Mojave and the future of the Mac

Mac World - Fri, 2018-09-28 06:00

“The Mac keeps going forever.”

So said Apple senior vice president Phil Schiller in an interview in this very publication on the occasion of the computing platform’s 30th anniversary in 2014. With this week’s release of macOS Mojave, the modern version of the Mac’s operating system hit its fifteenth major release, and celebrated its seventeen-and-a-half birthday—quickly closing in on outliving its predecessor, the classic Mac OS.

Vantrue OnDash N1 Pro dash cam review: A little gem of a basic dash cam

PC World - Fri, 2018-09-28 03:23

Okay, the Vantrue N1 Pro by its lonesome is only an $80 dash cam. A very nice dash cam. But as we recommend GPS for legal and travel log reasons, I'm going to talk about it as if the $22 optional GPS mount were part of the deal. If you're smart, it will be. That brings us to $102.

Either way, this tiny unit is our new favorite low-cost dash cam. Great basics, compact installation, a real battery, and excellent video captures will do that for you.

This review is part of our ongoing roundup of the best dash cams. Go there for more reviews and buying advice.

Why iOS apps on the Mac will not just improve the Mac, but iOS, too

Mac World - Thu, 2018-09-27 16:00

MacOS Mojave is here, and with it, Apple is now officially shipping four Mac apps that were written for iOS and run using a translation system that Apple’s planning on rolling out to app developers next year.

But while it’s fun to consider what apps from the iOS App Store might come to the Mac App Store in 2019, it’s also worth asking what else Apple might bring to macOS next year—and whether it might have some unexpected benefits for iPad users in the process.

This system needs to improve

Let’s start with the obvious: This entire project of bringing iOS apps to the Mac is a work in progress. As Apple said on stage at WWDC in June, perhaps the best way for Apple to understand the scope of work that’s required to allow iOS apps to reside on the Mac is for the company to apply that technology to its own apps. So in macOS Mojave, we have News, Home, Voice Memos, and Stocks.
